The Faculty of Prophylactic Medicine (Sanitary Medicine)

The year 1869 can be considered as the date of establishment of the Faculty, when Professor A.I. Jacobi organized Russia's first Department of Social Hygiene at the Medical Faculty of Kazan Imperial University. In 1930, together with the reorganization of the Medical Faculty into an Institute, established was the Sanitary-hygiene Faculty.

The Faculty of Prophylactic Medicine trains doctors-hygienists and epidemiologists, the scope of activities of whom includes the assessment of human health and the environment and the implementation of a complex of preventive measures. Graduates of the Faculty of Prophylactic Medicine receive specific training for working in the system of sanitary and epidemiological inspectorate. The period of study is 6 years.

The period of studies is 6 years. The first three years students of the faculty take general courses that are offered by the university program of bio-medical sciences. In the fourth year along with the general courses students have to take special disciplines in hygiene and prophylactic treatment, which prepares them for the degree project work as well as to specialize in the field of occupational diseases, dietology and food hygiene, ecological problems, epidemiology and microbiology.

During the first three years of training students receive training according to the University's general program in basic biomedical sciences. In the fourth year, together with the basic clinical training students study a number of specialized disciplines of hygienic and preventive profile, which allow them already during undergraduate training (sixth year) to specialize in occupational medicine, occupational diseases, nutrition and nutritional hygiene, environmental issues, epidemiology and microbiology.

Faculty members for many years have successfully been engaged in conducting scientific research projects commissioned by major industrial enterprises of the Republic, various ministries and agencies in the field of sanitation, hygiene and occupational medicine, hygiene of children and adolescents.
